Stafford’s crumbling Carnegie Library hit the news on Wednesday. The Victorian Society announced that it was one of 10 most endangered buildings in England and Wales.
The Victorian Society said that Stafford Borough Council should compulsorily purchase the building. This would allow Stafford Old Library Trust to repair and bring the Old Library back into use. SOLT plans for as a much needed Cultural Centre for Stafford.
SOLT have not broached the subject of compulsory purchase with the Borough, as they wish to engage in productive talks with them. The fear is that talk of spending such large sums in these harsh times of austerity will cause the Council to close the meeting room door to them.
However, now the subject has been broached, it can no longer be ignored.
Some of the Staffordians that SOLTs trustees have spoken to believe that now is the time for the County Council to step in. After all, as the Borough Council have pointed out, it was the County who sold the Old Library back in 2012. And this has proven to be one of the most misguided sales in our town’s history.
Stafford Old Library Trust, have begun to make enquiries to whoever will listen. In the meantime, views are sought from all residents and public servants in Stafford.
